PayPal Security Measures
Writer Wishes to Remain Anonymous
Today’s email brings a spam called “Paypal Security Measures” supposedly from “firstname.lastname@example.org” purporting to be a routine ‘audit’ that requires the recipient to visit a page (a very authentic looking PayPal page, though the logos do not copy for sending/referral) and supply additional information. In reviewing the headers, it becomes clear the spam comes from: compuserve.com (pcp01724974pcs.nash01.tn.comcast.net [188.8.131.52]).
The page recipients are directed to is:http://184.108.40.206/%70%70/%75%70%64%61%74%65%2E%68%74%6D That page is a ‘re-application’ form. When submitted to SpamCop, they corroborate the sender’s ISP is Comcast. I notifed PayPal by email AND called at my expense to warn them. I got an unpleasant disinterested rep who said everybody is warned when they first sign on that PayPal won’t ever ask such information so there is no cause for concern…. and they aren’t warning people on the theory they can better “catch” the villian if they don’t announce the fraud is occurring. I have the email and Spam Cop report and will try to copy those below, though I do not know if there are character limits on this form.
