The Buyer Made It Up

I used to buy and sell items for the online game Diablo 2 through Paypal. I would scan eBay and supplier websites for cheap deals, then relist the items at a higher price either through eBay or my website. I would order the items as I got the orders myself, and everything went smoothly for months. Each transaction netted a profit of anywhere from $3 to $15, but most people bought several items at a time. The horror started when I received five orders in a short period of time from the same individual.

The buyer and I exchanged emails concerning the content of the order(s), questions about the shop, and “thank you”s. Suspiciously, I received one or two of the emails from a different email address than the buyer’s main Paypal address, but I still only sent the items to the main Paypal address. Everything had gone fine up until now. I had delivered the items within the promised time, I had received the money and deposited it into my bank account, and the buyer was content with his items.

Suddenly, I got an email. “Transaction Reversed”. The buyer claimed that someone was using his credit card and did not actually buy the item. The money was immediately taken /right out of my bank account/. No worries. I could deal with this. Then another came. And another. And two more. Five reversals; I had now lost roughly $110. I immediately phoned Paypal and had a long conversation. They refused to tell me anything I could do until I got a relative of mine (a lawyer) to talk to them, after which I was told that I should fax the correspondance between Paypal, myself, and the buyer.

I did, minutes after I hung up the phone. I faxed every last email concerning the buyer and his orders, including how he himself thanked me for sending the items! I emailed the buyer as well and politely asked to discuss the matter. Of course, five months later, no response. Paypal said they would try to get the money back, sinec it apparently was under the credit card company’s jurisdiction, not Paypal’s (yeah, right!). Months and a dozen phone calls later, my money is still is Paypal’s hands. What’s this? I get another five emails from Paypal. Apparently, I’ve been charged $10 for EACH TRANSACTION that they are disputing. So, now I’ve lost not only my profit AND my inital investment, but an additional $50 as well. My total losses are now about $160.

A few days after those emails, I get another five. The credit card company of the buyer has decided to charge me a fee for each transaction as well, bringing my total money lost to over $200. I only this week received notification that DESPITE the conclusive proof provided in my email correspondence, my case lost, and my money was gone.

Let me think for a second and summarize what just happened here; there are two scenarios.

1. The buyer made the whole thing up. He makes off with his money (my money), my items, and I end up being charged extra for it.

2. The buyer was too stupid to keep his password safe and got his account and email account jacked. I am penalized for it, and of course, the guy keeps his items too.

I was even threatened by Paypal that if my balance remained negative (it was only negative because of the money THEY took out without my consent) they would sue! Luckily, with the same relative on hand, I dealt with that idiotic warning swiftly.

So, if you ever want to get back at someone, just send them money then claim you didn’t send it. You’ll get your money back, and they’ll be charged plenty of money for it! It works twice as well if you’re buying something. Go ahead and spend $4000 on an EverQuest account. You’ll get all your money back PLUS the account!
